Disaster on primary day as machine glitches cause chaos

NEW YORK (CBS 2 / WCBS 880/1010 WINS) - There were major problems at the polls on primary day in New York and it's all connected to the debut of the state's new electronic voting machines.

New York City spent $160 million on new voting machines, but the roll out was embarrassing.

Some polling places opened as much as four hours late and thousands may have been unable to cast ballots, reports CBS 2's Marcia Kramer.

"That is a royal screw-up and it's completely unacceptable," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

Is "compulsory voting" the answer?

(NPR) - William Galston thinks the key to less polarization in the electorate is compulsory voting. It's the disaffected, the angry, who vote. The Howard Beales of the world. If everyone — including those in the less intense middle — voted, you would get fewer ideologues in office.

The Brookings Institution scholar is among those who are dismayed at the turnout in this country. Those in the wide middle of the spectrum are the ones who abstain from voting, and Galston thinks that's not good. Get more people in the process by making it easier to vote through things like liberalized absentee voting.

Libertarian teen announces candidacy for mayor

(Shreveport Times) - A Shreveport teen and part-time preacher announced Thursday his plans to seek the office of mayor.

Parker Ward, who said he is an incoming senior at Huntington High School, will run as a Libertarian, he said during an event at Catfish Landing restaurant, 7601 Pines Road.

The 18-year-old hopes, if elected, to ensure that the city spends only as much as it brings in, to bring more businesses and jobs to Shreveport and to assure Shreveporters that local police will honor the Fourth Amendment — which guards citizens against unreasonable searches.

Doctors pursue House, Senate seats

WASHINGTON (USA Today) - Forty-seven physicians — 41 Republicans and six Democrats — are running for the House or Senate this year, three times the number of doctors serving in Congress today, according to a USA TODAY review.

An influx of doctors to Congress could alter the landscape for future debates over Medicare and rising insurance premiums months after lawmakers approved President Obama's 10-year, $938 billion health care law.
